Shattered bamboo reeds
By Juan L. Mercado
Philippine Daily Inquirer

“Do not look at the heavens through a bamboo reed.” Can this Japanese proverb help us sift through the May 13 elections’ mixed  bag? Nobody loses an election here. Those trashed insist they were cheated.

“My supporters and lawyers insist I fight on,” said legislator and Talisay Mayor Eduardo Gullas, 24 hours after the polls closed. “But I concede and wish my opponent all the best.”

After being trounced, Cebu City Vice Mayor Joy Augustus Young insisted: The surveys of his camp foresaw a 14-percent victory margin. “Survey result is what is the reality.” And who confused actual election tallies with survey “guesstimates”? Cebu buffed up financial assistance to teachers from P5,000 to P10,000. The teachers were bought, Young  charged.

Nonsense. A hefty dose of Prozac or Zyprexia would jolt  Young back to reality. The Villafuertes, who have dominated   Camarines Sur for almost 40 years, need that too.

Nelly Villafuerte’s well-funded machine scraped up 31,364 votes. But the wife of the late interior secretary and former Naga City Mayor Jesse Robredo racked up 102,694 votes. Like Corazon Aquino and her son, Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, Leni Robredo was badgered by people to run.

Asymmetrical
FIRST PERSON By Alex Magno (The Philippine Star) | Updated May 18, 2013 - 12:00am

Perhaps Taipei wants our senior representatives to walk on their knees while delivering a letter of apology from our president. But then again, perhaps President Aquino should have signed the letter delivered by his emissary --- as well as addressed it to his counterpart instead of a lower-ranking official.

According to some reports (neither confirmed nor denied by the valiant Palace spokesmen), the letter sent to a Taiwanese minister was not duly signed. That was the reason the Filipino emissary tasked with delivering it was dismissed by Taipei as not duly-authorized.”

There is anger in Taiwan. It spills into the streets. One Filipino migrant worker went to hospital after being attacked by a baseball bat in random and racist violence. Our 87,000 OFWs in Taiwan are staying indoors for safety. Filipinos are not being served in convenience stores and absorb rude remarks in the streets.

Meanwhile, the government of Taiwan issued a staccato of measures as soon as the deadline they imposed on our government for an apology passed. They withdrew their resident representative in Manila, cancelled new OFW contracts, sent home our representative, withdrew from an international food exhibition in Manila, banned their nationals from coming to the Philippines and, most disturbing, paraded their superior military hardware in exercises held close to our border.

There could be more punitive measures forthcoming. Taipei said so.

The government of President Ma is under pressure from its citizens. There are demonstrations in the major cities. Taiwanese television has running coverage of Philippine inaction. Photos of President Aquino with his “smiling dog” smirk shortly after the Luneta massacre are reproduced in Taiwanese media and held up in posters by protestors in the streets.

Everyone delayed transmission, except Comelec-Smartmatic
GOTCHA By Jarius Bondoc (The Philippine Star) | Updated May 17, 2013 - 12:00am

Disturbingly, tallying by much-touted superfast voting machines bogged down for two-and-a-half days after Election Day. Thirty percent of the results, or about 10 million votes that could alter the initial trend in the senatorial count, remained un-transmitted to central servers. For that, the Comelec and election automation supplier Smartmatic blamed the telcos, the party-lists, the precinct inspectors, the... It was everyone’s fault – except Comelec-Smartmatic’s.

Before that there was a spurt of ballot results from all over. In the few hours from the close of voting Monday till just past midnight, the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting, a poll watchdog, had come out with 54 percent of the results. Then it slowed down to trickles. By dusk Tuesday, only about 300,000 additional votes were recorded.

At first the PPCRV tally was even too fast. Other poll watchdogs that distrust it as a “Comelec-Smartmatic apologist” noted that it was able to report 12 million votes one mere hour after starting to count, a physical impossibility. The PPCRV acknowledged a computer program error. It only brought back to mind Election 2010, when 256 million votes were reported from only 40 million actual voters. That it took a Smartmatic exec and a tech to fix the watchdog’s bug last Tuesday did not boost credibility any. For it emerged that the PPCRV’s tallying software was made for it by Smartmatic, the very outfit it was supposed to watch.

The older watchdog Namfrel attributed the subsequent delays to modems and compact-flash (CF) cards. Allegedly there were too few modems, very slow at that, so precinct election inspectors had to queue up for long hours to transmit. In other cases, the CF cards were defective and wouldn’t transmit, so the inspectors – public school teachers – had to commute to poblacions to submit these to municipal canvassers.

The delays were concentrated in the usual dagdag-bawas (padding-shaving) areas: the Mindanao autonomous region and the Cordilleras. Another watchdog, the AES (Automated Election System) Watch, suspected that the counting was being manipulated. Criticizing Smartmatic’s precinct count optical scanners, the AES Watch had foreseen the transmission problems. Its computer expert-members warned that the Comelec never tested and retested the PCOS units for debugging, but relied only on Smartmatic’s false assurances of reliability.

At Large
Grace Poe and Taiwan
By Rina Jimenez-David
Philippine Daily Inquirer
3:31 am | Wednesday, May 15th, 2013

I knew Grace Poe-Llamazares had a good head on her shoulders, as well as a heart, when I first met her at a Bulong Pulungan media forum while she was still chair of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB).

But listening to her interviews with TV anchors on the day after the elections, I was even more impressed. Despite her stunning win, overtaking Sen. Loren Legarda in first place in the senatorial tally despite Legarda’s dominance in all preelection surveys, Grace sounded humble and sober, and, as she told her interviewers: “Grateful that I am just included among the winning 12.”

She may have been euphoric at her unexpected victory—she was in fact hosting a celebration with her family during one interview—but when asked to what, or whom, she owed her win, she took the time to frame her words carefully, and give a sober, level-headed reply.

Grace took time to thank those who helped her in the campaign: Team PNoy campaign manager Sen. Serge Osmeña and fellow candidate Sen. Chiz Escudero. She conceded that her TV ads, especially the latter one that featured her with her mother Susan Roces, were effective in introducing her to the populace and framing what people called her “narrative.”

But she reserved her highest praise for the legacy and memory of her late father. Apparently, she told the media, voters bought her line that she would continue the promise frustrated by his defeat when he ran for president, and then cut short by his early demise. And indeed, it seems that the people have given Grace the love and respect and admiration they reserved for “The King.”

Bottled scorpions
By Juan L. Mercado
Philippine Daily Inquirer
11:04 pm | Friday, May 10th, 2013

“People never lie so much as after a hunt, during a war—or before an election.” Otto von Bismarck’s adage unreels with a vengeance in the homestretch of the May 13 elections.

How many of 52,014,648 voters will turn up on Monday? They’re to fill 18,022 posts: 12 in the Senate and 229 in the House. In 80 provinces, 143 cities and 1,491 towns, all elective posts are up for grabs, plus slots for party-list representatives.

Credit the year-round listing by the Commission on Elections for this unprecedented number. The Comelec also exorcised “ghosts.” In the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, almost a quarter of a million names (236,489, to be precise) were deleted. “Most were either double registrants or were too young to vote.” The Comelec also scrapped 238,557 absentee overseas voters. Most failed—or didn’t bother—to vote in the last two elections.

An overload of political pap and “dirty tricks” swamps voters. Posters are plastered end to end on every wall. Some peddle candidates even their mothers wouldn’t vote for. The campaign jingles deafen. Handouts against “Team Patay” barge even into private space to pray.

“Scorpions-in-the-bottle” brawls mar both local and national campaigns.

There’s the Rub
Young
By Conrado de Quiros
Philippine Daily Inquirer
9:29 pm | Wednesday, May 8th, 2013

Miriam Defensor-Santiago had an interesting piece of advice for voters on the eve of elections. Don’t vote old, vote young.

“I want young people in the Senate. I don’t like septuagenarians who are actually campaigning for wheelchairs. I’ve never loved these characters who live in a time warp.”

The reports said she had people like Ernesto Maceda and Jun Magsaysay in mind in her category of old or septuagenarian. But it’s not hard to see that the real target of her diatribe isn’t running at all. Who is of course the almost nonagenarian Juan Ponce Enrile. It’s Enrile Miriam has a running feud with, the Senate president she accused of using taxpayer money to reward his favorite senators, and who in turn—or at least his subaltern, Ping Lacson, did—accused her of being a “crusading crook.” All of whom make you feel old just by looking, and listening, to them. All of whom give you whole new insights into the meaning of “old” or “septuagenarian.”

But of course you ought to vote young and not old. But of course you should embrace the sprightly and not the doddering. But so in ways that have to do with the spiritual and not the physical. So in ways that have to do with the mental and not the chronological. So in ways that have to do with outlook and not with lookout—for oneself above all others.

In any case, even from a chronological viewpoint, “old” and “young” are relative terms. The senators in particular may be categorized as young only in relation to the ancient among them. The minimum age to run for senator to begin with is 35, which is not young at all to the majority of this country’s voters who are well below that. The presumption of course is that 35 and above offer a reasonable guarantee of maturity. The reality in fact, particularly for those who have gone on into politics, which remains predominantly trapo politics, patronage politics, personality politics, is that 35 and above offer only reasonable presumption of corruptibility.

Facebook logo gets a facelift
April 22, 2013 12:38pm

Few Facebook users might notice, but the social network has updated its logo and icons, a tech site reported over the weekend.

A report on Mashable noted the new main logo has no more faint blue line at the bottom of the "f" icon, and the "f" is pulled closer to the edge of the box.

"The 'f' logo hasn't been updated to all pages just yet, including the Brand Permissions page. However, it has been added as the picture to Facebook's Twitter account," it said.

Facebook also refreshed the logos of its other official pages, including the security badge and the privacy icon, Mashable said.

It said the redesigned logos feature Facebook's blue color as a background "to create a more streamlined, uniformed look."
