MANILA, Philippines --- President Benigno S. Aquino III vowed Thursday to bring to justice the perpetrators behind a multi-billion-peso pyramid scam that duped thousands of people in Visayas and Mindanao.
The President said the government will tap a legal assistance pact signed among members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to track the man behind the fraudulent investment scheme.
Manuel Amalilio, the Malaysian owner of Aman Futures Group Phils., Inc, has reportedly escaped to Sabah, Malaysia amid mounting complaints against his pyramid scam. Amalilio’s company reportedly duped 15,000 people, including politicians, policemen, soldiers, government workers, farmers, overseas Filipino workers, in several provinces of P12 billion.
The Philippine government is now coordinating with the International Police (Interpol) and the Malaysian Embassy in the Philippines to help locate and bring the Aman owner to justice.
National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Nonnatus Caesar Rojas and Justice Secretary Leila de Lima confirmed that 32-year-old Amalilio, also known as Mohammad Suffian Saaid, had already left the country and was currently in Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia.
His cohorts, however, are believed to be still in the country, Rojas added.
“We do not know how he got out and when. Basta ang information is that we confirmed he is right now in Malaysia,” Rojas told reporters in a news conference at the Department of Justice (DOJ) yesterday.
The NBI sent a notice with the Interpol and Malaysian Embassy on Thursday informing them of the syndicated estafa charges slapped against Saaid before the DOJ.
The country has no extradition treaty or mutual legal aid treaty with Malaysia. The Philippines and Malaysia on the other hand are members of ASEAN.
