MANILA, Philippines - Fisherfolk groups on Monday pressed President Benigno Aquino III to stop the construction of malls and high-rise condominiums along major water waterways, river systems, coastal shores and flood prone areas to mitigate the impact of typhoons and monsoon rains.
Pamalakaya, Save Laguna Lake Movement and Koalisyon Kontra Kumbersyon ng Manila Bay blamed the mushrooming of shopping malls and high-rise buildings constructed along Manila Bay, Pasig River, Laguna Lake and in other low land areas for massive flooding in Metro Manila and nearby regions of Central Luzon and Southern Tagalog.
"These multi-billion projects of corporate real estate syndicates and infra monopolies have impeded or caused major obstruction to the natural flow of water that resulted to massive and devastating flood all over the main capital and nearby provinces," said Fernando Hicap, Pamalakaya national chairperson.
"The coastal towns of Cavite were submerged to deep waters because of the R-1 road extension project or Cavitex. Before Cavitex, flood is not an issue among the coastal people of the province. Since the road project came into existence and altered the natural flow of waters in Bacoor Bay, the frequent flooding has become a regular nightmare to tens of thousands of fisher people and residents along Manila and Bacoor Bays," Hicap added.
He said the construction of malls and other high-end condominiums near or along Pasig and Marikina rivers and in Manila Bay and Laguna Lake have led to frequent flooding in Metro Manila and nearby provinces of Cavite, Rizal, Laguna, Bulacan, Pampanga and Bataan.
