University of Victoria scientists, along with physicists from around the world, moved a step closer Wednesday to discovering a sub-atomic particle that’s key to explaining how matter formed at the dawn of the universe.
In a global press conference from Geneva, Switzerland, the ATLAS and CMS teams of researchers said they have found clear signs of a new particle that may well be the elusive Higgs boson, also known as the God particle.
More research is needed to confirm the discovery, but scientists are confident they’re on the right track.
“It’s fantastic,” said UVic physics professor Michel Lefebvre, founding spokesman for the ATLAS-Canada team. “We’re living an historical moment.”
