A Texas man visiting Russellville to borrow a truck after wrecking his car will return to his home state with a little more than another vehicle after purchasing a $50,000-winning lottery ticket at a South Arkansas Avenue gas station.

Jairo Jiron, 20, of Dallas, cashed in his “Loteria” lottery ticket Monday after purchasing the $3 instant game ticket at the Exxon Tiger Mart. Jiron, who has been visiting Russellville for a couple of weeks and plans to return to Dallas this weekend, said he bought the ticket only after his cousin encouraged him to.

“It was her fault I won because she convinced me to buy the Loteria. I guess I owe her some,” he said. “I really bought it with her money, but it was my luck.”

Jiron said he isn’t sure what he’ll do with his winnings, but he would like to open a business.

“There are a lot of things out there. I’ve still got to think about some,” he said. “I might open a little body shop. I’m really into cars and things like that.”

Jiron’s winnings came almost exactly a month after Betty Duryea of Pottsville won $40,000 from a Powerball ticket.

Duryea’s ticket was purchased at Cash Saver on West Main Street. Duryea purchased the extra $1 multiplier, which quadrupled the $10,000 she won in the April 14 Powerball drawing.

Duryea claimed her prize April 17, according to Arkansas Lottery Commission spokesperson Julie Baldridge.

“It’s random, so to get two big winners in Russellville is wonderful,” Baldridge said. “It’s one of those things where you just never know.”
