MANILA -- The main suspect in a shooting spree by Philippine Coast Guard officers that killed a Taiwanese fisherman in May 2013 did not show up at a pre-trial hearing in the Philippines' Batanes Province on Monday.
Arnold de la Cruz, the Philippine Coast Guard commanding officer suspected of ordering the strafing of Taiwanese fishing boat the Kuang Ta Hsing No. 28 on May 9, 2013, has been charged with homicide along with seven of his subordinates.
De la Cruz and Seaman 1st Class Mhelvin Bendo were also indicted for obstruction of justice after they were found to have given untrue descriptions of the trajectory of the bullets fired on the fishing vessel.
Aside from de la Cruz, the seven other defendants were all present at the hearing accompanied by public attorneys, and they all claimed their innocence in the death of 65-year-old Taiwanese fisherman Hung Shih-cheng.
Hung was killed when a Philippine Coast Guard vessel chased after the Pingtung County-based fishing boat in waters where the economic zones of Taiwan and the Philippines overlap.
