By your appointments you shall be judged. P-Noy may want to keep that in mind as he makes the second batch of major appointments in his presidency. The first, of course, was when he assumed power. This second time is a confluence of three events: the ouster of Renato Corona, the death of Jesse Robredo, and the approaching midterm elections.
Certain prominent businessmen speak of their regret in overlooking the earliest appointments made by Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo after she was swept to power by EDSA II. They blame their self-installed blinders on post-EDSA euphoria and the initial optimism generated by an overachieving, no-nonsense female economist.
Among GMA’s first moves, the businessmen point out, was to install a man known to be close to her husband as chairman of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. PAGCOR, the businessmen lament, became an enormous piggybank for political patronage throughout the Arroyo administration.
Today every appointment made by President Aquino is being closely scrutinized, for indications that he is straying from his straight path or daang matuwid.
The pun of the day is that there is a Puno blocking the path, and it’s no idle joke. Since the early days of P-Noy’s presidency, the resigned (wasn’t he originally fired?) undersecretary for peace and order has been regarded – unfairly or not – as an aberration in the administration whose battle cry is, “Kung walang corrupt, walang mahirap.”
At gatherings, people discuss Puno’s fall, with the questions narrowed down to two: did he do wrong, and how much did P-Noy know?
If it’s any consolation to Puno’s supporters (or more accurately, enemies of Mar Roxas), the transfer of Roxas to the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has been met with a sigh of relief by investors.
