A Cairns man had no idea he was $1 million-plus richer after winning Lotto.

AFTER driving around with a winning Lotto ticket in his car for a week, a Cairns man has finally claimed his prize to become an instant millionaire.

The man, who wants to remain anonymous, won just over $1 million after sharing in a $20 million Gold Lotto draw on August 11, The Cairns Post reports.

With no idea he had won big, the unclaimed Jumbo QuickPick entry remained in the man's car for seven days while Golden Casket unsuccessfully tried to track him down.

"I had the ticket sitting in my car all along and just forgot to check it," he said.

"I buy a Saturday Gold Lotto ticket every week but only check them in-store when I have time."

NewsXpress Cairns Central owner Christine Hamilton said the man, who is a regular customer, was still coming to terms with his win.
