MANILA, Philippines --- Militant lawmakers slammed the Aquino administration on Wednesday for its least prioritized medical program for the poor that includes the phasing out of charity wards and allocating a “dismal” budget for health.
“Phasing out charity wards is grossly inhumane. This will displace poor patients especially those who are not covered by the PhilHealth-sponsored program,” said Bayan Muna Rep. Teddy Casino.
For her part, Gabriela Women’s Party-list Rep. Emmi de Jesus said the P56.8-billion proposed 2013 budget for the Department of Health “dismally falls short” of the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendation.
De Jesus said the Aquino government’s health allocation is a “mere 1.89 percent of the gross domestic product” yet the WHO recommendation is 5 percent of the GDP for public health.
