IT’S funny; we keep on telling the world that China bullies the Philippines at Scarborough Shoal, but on record China is our business partner. We buy their cheap-but-not-so-durable products for building construction. We also import Chinese toys and later on we find out that some of them have toxic materials. We also purchase grocery items from them and sometimes we complain because some of their products contain chemicals not good for health.
It’s fun in the Philippines! We invite the Chinese to come to the Philippines as tourists. While here in our country, they eat dirty ice cream. They dance tinikling as part of a learn-to-dance package. They stay in our hotels and taste Pinoy food in our restaurants. They go to Baguio City, our summer capital, to have photo ops with the Igorots. Everything is normal. Of course, in every rule there is an exception. If things can happen, they will always happen.
There was one dramatic and traumatic incident at the Luneta where the Chinese bus loaded with tourists from Hong Kong became victims of a hostage taker. That was not fun.
Anyway, that was it! We hope not to repeat negative events in history. What I am trying to establish here is our business relationship with China. There is no Philippine ambassador in China but we have two consuls. An ambassador is an official of highest rank to represent the government of our country. A consul is an agent appointed by a country to look after the interest of its citizens and its commerce.
