MANILA, Philippines - Chris Algieri isn’t banking on a super fight happening between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.
The man who suffered a beating from Pacquiao in Macau last month recently spoke to HitFirstBoxing.com about his thoughts on the fight everyone wants to see, expressing his doubt on it.
“Personally, I do not think the fight is going to ever happen. They’re not any closer to making it than they ever were, and I think that’s really indicative that the fights really not going to happen,” the New York-based fighter said.
“I’ve been saying it before; it’s not necessarily the best fight in the world of boxing. It’s great for crossover appeal for the casual fan, but in terms of boxing I don’t think it’s the best fight out there,” Algieri added.
Algieri hit the canvass six times against Pacquiao at the Cotai Arena in Macau last Nov. 23 and absorbed the first loss of his 21-fight career. Pacquiao afterwards called out Mayweather to step up, and the undefeated American responded by also challenging the Filipino to a May 2 showdown next year.
Though a Mayweather-Pacquiao bout is expected to be the richest boxing match ever, Algieri is among the rare few who aren’t upbeat on seeing it.
“Neither guy is in their prime, they’re both fantastic fighters, but it’s also about styles. Manny is a great fighter but I don’t think he’s going to match up well with Floyd’s particular style. I don’t think it’s going to be a particularly exciting fight and I don’t think it’s going to be a particularly competitive fight,” Algieri explained.
