Lotto Powerball winner “Trev from Te Kauwhata” has quit his day job – despite assurances he would return.
The 34-year-old Waikato man scooped $26.5 million a month ago, insisting he would continue working “because I enjoy my job and not because I have to pay bills”.
"Nothing is going to change. At the end of the day my bank balance is longer than my phone number, but I love my job."
In an interview with Campbell Live, Trev bet John Campbell the entire $26.5 million he would go to work the next day.
He didn’t.
Trev’s co-workers at Countdown Huntly told media that he had been told to stay home until the attention died down. However, a spokeswoman today confirmed he had not been back since his big win.
“He no longer works here, but he still keeps in touch,” she said.
The winning ticket was sold at the Te Kauwhata Four Square Foodmarket in Te Kauwhata, about 40km north of Hamilton. The town has a population of around 1200.
Two weeks after scoring his prize, Trev splurged on a new $70,000 Holden ute and a car for his mum. He was also reportedly looking at purchasing a Dodge Viper.
Locals told Fairfax Media they have no idea where Trev is now.
There were reports shortly after the win that a number of people had come out of the woodwork begging Trev and his family for money.
