Ten days ago, a Richmond grandfather of 12 was wondering how he was going to pay for presents for three big celebrations coming up later in the year.
The 70-year-old retiree's wife turns 70 in August, they have their 50th wedding anniversary in September and one of their four sons gets married in November. But now buying presents won't be a problem after the couple claimed a $500,000 prize they won in Lotto.
"We were just starting to plan things and work out what we were we going to do," Eric, who asked to keep his surname confidential, said. "Now we don't have to worry – this couldn't have happened at a better time."
Eric said they purchased $32 worth of lucky dip tickets from Pak 'n Save in Richmond on Anzac Day for the draw on April 28. Although he watched the draw live on television, he said they only claimed their prize last Wednesday.
"My wife works on Monday and Tuesday and I wanted her to come along when we claimed it so we waited. Although it was only four days it seemed like a lot, lot longer – it's amazing what a little piece of paper can do to your life."
Eric said he had already gone to the Pak 'n Save where had purchased their tickets, and "gave them some flowers and chocolates to say thanks".
In addition to paying for birthday, anniversary and wedding presents later this year, Eric said the prize money would allow his wife to retire without worrying about their finances.
"She earns a few dollars but she likes to spend it, too. She always gives her grandchildren $50 for their birthday and at Christmas so now at least we can afford it."
