TORONTO – It was sunny side up for some restaurant workers in Durham Region east of Toronto as they picked up a $21.4-million lottery prize.

Seven workers from an Eggsmart breakfast restaurant share the winning ticket in Saturday’s Lotto 6-49 jackpot.

The group took a break from flipping pancakes on Monday to pick up their prize in Toronto.

The group members range in age from 24 to 52, and each will get just over $3 million.

Susan Pennington of Whitby says she has been collecting money and buying lottery tickets for the group for the past year.

On Mother’s Day, which was also her 52nd birthday, she wrote down the winning numbers before heading to work, where she checked the tickets and found her gang had won.

“As soon as we realized we won, my coworker and I called everyone first thing in the morning, and I texted my boss saying, ‘Can’t work today because we won Lotto 6-49!’” she laughed.

The restaurant’s owner, Nick Zarafonitis of Toronto, says he thought the text message was a joke.

But later the group went to a store and took turns scanning the ticket on a self-checker to validate their win.

The workers say they plan to pay off debts, purchase something nice for themselves and share their winnings with their families.
