MANILA, Philippines - A Philippine Military Academy (PMA) cadet is fighting for his life after he was shot by a jeepney robber in Fairview, Quezon City last Saturday, a military official said Monday.
Cadet First Class Alfonso Aviles, who is set to graduate this year, is now comatose after he underwent an operation at the Armed Forces Medical Center to remove the bullet in his head, according to military spokesman Col. Arnulfo Burgos.
"Cadet Aviles right now is unconscious. He is in comatose and confined at the Intensive Care Unit. Since the incident occurred, he has not spoken (about the robbery)," Burgos said.
Neurosurgeon Capt Junior Borja, in a medical bulletin, said Aviles's health has stabilized. "Patient has stable vital signs," the bulletin said.
The 23-year-old Aviles and several senior cadets were in Metro Manila last week to serve as proctors in the PMA entrance examination held Sunday. They were billeted at the AFP Medical Center, said Burgos.
They were given free time Saturday and Aviles visited his parents in San Jose Del Monte town in Bulacan.
The PMA cadet was returning from Bulacan when an armed man declared a holdup in the jeepney Aviles was riding.
Aviles tried to grab the robber's pistol, which went off.
He was hit in the neck and the bullet got stuck in his head.
"As of now, Cadet Aviles is still under close monitoring following his successful operation on Saturday night. He is currently being monitored for any intracranial pressure," Burgos said.
